Abstract
We statistically observed a series of 133 patients who admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Severance Hospital, under the impression of acquired heart disease during 15 years period from Jan. 1957 to Dec. 1971.
The results were as follows;
1. During last 15 years period, we observed totally 540 patients with congenital or acquired heart disease Among the them, congenital heart disease were 407 cases(75.5%) and acquired heart disease were 133 cases(24. 5%). The ratio of congenital to acquired heart disease was 3 : 1. ¢¥
2. This series of 133 cases consisted of acute rheumatic heart disease 69 cases(51.9%), chronic valvular disease 26 cases(19.5%), Pericarditis 18 cases(13.5%) , myocarditis 12 cases(9. 0%), subacute bacterial endocarditis 3 cases(2.3%), primary myocardial disease 3 cases(2.3%), myxoma 1 case;0. 75%1 and Takayasu¢¥s disease I case(0.75¡Æ%). Therefore acute rheumatic heart disease and chronic valvular disease comprised more than 70 per cent of acquired heart diseases.
3. Age incidence was adolescence 45. 1%, last child-hood 40.6%, early childhood 13.5%, and infancy 0. 8%. The higher incidence was noted in the school age group(The sum of adolescence and late childhood was more than 80 per cent.)
4. More prevalent in males(64. 7%) than in females (35.3%). The sex ratio of male to female was 1. 5 : I.
5. Total expired cases were 15 cases, which included myocarditis 8 cases, acute rheumatic heart disese 4 cases, acute pericarditis 2 cases, and myxoma 1 case: So over-all mortality was 11.3%.
